THROUGH COMPOSITION AS EXPLANATION, 2010 – ongoing
performance at Moderna Museet 12 & 13 November 2011
Through Composition as Explanation is a project about shaping a stage performance. The form is decided by Gertrude Steins essay Composition as Explanation from 1926. The project is created out of discussions and practises where reading the text aloud is the focused medium, with the aim to activate a space and to make Steins text present.
The text Composition as Explanation discuss, to its form and in what it brings on as its topic, the distinction between what is contemporary (at present as “now”) and what is classic (and thereby belongs to history, a history already agreed on in a sort of consensus procedure). Steins text is formed as an explanation in the way words circles and repetitively develop an argumentation, simultaneously it can be read as a score, a flow of words that suggest a development. It is a text which in the way it is written makes practice of its own theory.
The form of the text is the foundation for the work and all practises in the process. A desire to understand the content of the text led to a development of a deep-reading practise. It is an ongoing work that aims to “-herse” instead of to “rehearse”, it is sharing a knowledge production.
Additional texts relevant for the context as well as other art works is taken into the process, where we discuss and combine them into a kind of understanding, a hypertext. The process takes on the task to translate the content in the text and the structure of Gertrude Steins language and to shape the translation to objects, to make space and place specific and as bodies and movement. The way these different things (material and space and movement) connect forms a structure. With these structures we like to explore the momentarily created theatrical situation and its potentiality.
Through Composition as Explanation consequently has two parallel processes going on: a deep-reading practise that can “herse” with gatherings of people and the practise of doing as what is to become staged versions of Gertrude Steins text.
The work Through Composition as Explanation is initiated by Liv Strand and is conducted in collaboration with
Marcus Doverud (performer, musician,
philosopher), Ana-Maria Hadji-Culea (curator, writer), and
Amelie Rydqvist (architect,
artist).
The work is supported by KU fundings from Kungl. Konsthögskolan in Stockholm, and by project support from the
City of
Stockholm,
and Kulturbryggan.
